In 2022, the Southeast Asian cigarettes containing tobacco market increased by 2.1% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after eight years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, saw a pronounced contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, cigarettes containing tobacco exports in South-Eastern Asia fell to X tons, shrinking by -10.5% compared with 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 14% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco exports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 51% of total exports. The Philippines (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cigarettes containing tobacco exports from Indonesia stood at +2.7%. At the same time, the Philippines (+10.3%) and Thailand (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-1.9%) and Singapore (-6.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+13 p.p.) and Indonesia (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -13.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Singapore ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 82% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 15%.

Among the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +15.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 8.6%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of cigarettes containing tobacco were imported in South-Eastern Asia; reducing by -5.2% against the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, cigarettes containing tobacco imports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Cambodia was the main importer of cigarettes containing tobacco in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. Singapore (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (17%), Indonesia (10%) and Malaysia (9.4%). The following importers - Timor-Leste (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - together made up 4.4% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +32.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Cambodia ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 76% of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, Indonesia, Timor-Leste and Lao People's Democratic Republic, which together accounted for a further 22%.

Among the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +28.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 13%.
