Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos decreased by -33.9% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 72%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.
In value terms, cigars and cigarillos exports dropped significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Indonesia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together committing a 13% share of total exports.
Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+85.7%) and the Philippines (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +85.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar increased by +7.8 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest cigars and cigarillos supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.
In Indonesia, cigars and cigarillos exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Philippines (+11.1% per year) and Myanmar (+45.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 26% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cigars and cigarillos export price decreased by -22.6% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 42%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+4.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, purchases abroad of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 104%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cigars and cigarillos imports expanded to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 25%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) represented the main importer of cigars, cheroots and cigarillos, comprising 60% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together committing a 35% share of total imports. The following importers - Cambodia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - together made up 4.8% of total imports.
Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cigars, cheroots and cigarillos imports, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Singapore (+5.5%), Malaysia (+4.5%) and Cambodia (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Thailand (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+38 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Cambodia (-3.3 p.p.), Thailand (-5.9 p.p.), Singapore (-7.9 p.p.) and Malaysia (-19 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cigars, cheroots and cigarillos in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 60% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Singapore amounted to +5.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+21.1% per year) and Malaysia (-5.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -15.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 51%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
