Clasp Knife Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian clasp knife market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2022, after eight years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of clasp knives decreased by -39.8% to X units in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 97%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

In value terms, clasp knife exports declined rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 106%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

Thailand was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 65% of total exports. Vietnam (X units) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (4.9%) and Singapore (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to clasp knife exports from Thailand stood at +19.4%. At the same time, Vietnam (+86.1%), Singapore (+50.2%) and Malaysia (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +86.1% from 2012-2022. While the share of Vietnam (+24 p.p.) and Singapore (+4.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Thailand (-8.4 p.p.) and Malaysia (-19.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest clasp knife supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 94% share of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +87.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, rising by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 33%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, purchases abroad of clasp knives increased by 21% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports showed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, clasp knife imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 58%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the main importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 47% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X units), Vietnam (X units), Singapore (X units) and Malaysia (X units), together constituting a 46% share of total imports. In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 16% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
