In 2022, the Southeast Asian common clay market increased by 1.1% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, common clay production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of common clay decreased by -44.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 177% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, common clay exports fell markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +70.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 108%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Malaysia represented the key exporter of common clay in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), generating a 33% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +9.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest common clay supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 100% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +9.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, purchases abroad of common clay increased by 25% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 66% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, common clay imports totaled $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Indonesia was the main importer of common clay in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 56% of total imports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (14%) and Thailand (11%).

Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +7.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+10.6%) and Thailand (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+26 p.p.) and Vietnam (+9.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Malaysia (-20.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported common clay in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Indonesia stood at +8.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+3.2% per year) and Vietnam (+3.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -17.1% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, common clay import price increased by +5.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced markedly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
