In value terms, coffee extract production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +69.2% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

In 2021, overseas shipments of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 35%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coffee extract exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 28%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 46% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (20%) and Thailand (5.4%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +24.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +21.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, standing approx. at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 8.2%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports recorded strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, coffee extract imports rose significantly to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -0.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Imports by Country

The Philippines represented the largest importer of coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 59% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 29% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to coffee extract imports into the Philippines stood at +9.0%. At the same time, Cambodia (+30.2%), Myanmar (+20.9%), Indonesia (+6.3%), Malaysia (+3.7%), Singapore (+1.6%) and Thailand (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +30.2% from 2012-2021. The Philippines (+8.9 p.p.), Cambodia (+3.1 p.p.) and Myanmar (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -3.4%, -3.7% and -3.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported coffee extracts, essences and concentrates in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 10% share.

In the Philippines, coffee extract imports increased at an average annual rate of +13.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+4.7% per year) and Thailand (+1.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 15%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
