Green Coffee Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian green coffee market increased by 5.2% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. The total consumption indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -12.0% against 2018 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Green Coffee Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, green coffee production dropped slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of green coffee production was Vietnam (X tons), comprising approx. 66% of total volume. Moreover, green coffee production in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), with a 5.2% share.

In Vietnam, green coffee production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+1.0% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+6.2% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of coffee (green) in South-Eastern Asia rose significantly to X tons per ha, growing by 7.1% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The green coffee harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 2% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, after five years of decline, there was growth in shipments abroad of coffee (green), when their volume increased by 3.5% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 18%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 72% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), committing a 24% share of total exports. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -3.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +4.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam saw its share reduced by -5.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 98% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +0.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas purchases of coffee (green), when their volume increased by 15% to X tons. Total imports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 47%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, green coffee imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia represented the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which resulted at 40% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) held a 25% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (12%), Vietnam (9.7%) and the Philippines (8.6%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +8.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest green coffee importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 71% share of total imports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +9.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 21%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+9.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
