Total exports indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.1% against 2019 indices. In 2022, purchases abroad of clays for construction and industrial use increased by 24% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. Total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +44.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 59%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, imports of clays for construction and industrial use expanded markedly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Indonesia represented the largest importer of clays for construction and industrial use in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 53% of total imports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 43% share of total imports.
Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +7.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+8.8%) and Thailand (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-6.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+23 p.p.) and Vietnam (+8.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -18.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported clays for construction and industrial use in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Indonesia amounted to +8.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+4.5% per year) and Vietnam (+2.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -14.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade.
