The Southeast Asian totaliser market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Overall, consumption saw a significant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, approx. X units of continuous and discontinuous totalisers were exported in South-Eastern Asia; falling by -54.3% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports faced a dramatic decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 56%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, totaliser exports declined notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 149% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Singapore (X units) represented the largest exporter of continuous and discontinuous totalisers, committing 61% of total exports. Indonesia (X units) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (7.4%) and Thailand (5.4%). Vietnam (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Singapore decreased at an average annual rate of -43.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+48.0%) and Thailand (+12.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.1%) and Vietnam (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+23 p.p.), Malaysia (+7.3 p.p.), Thailand (+5.3 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -38.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest totaliser supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Thailand ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 89% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +3.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 211%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+11.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of continuous and discontinuous totalisers increased by 304% to X units for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a prominent expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, totaliser imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

The Philippines was the main importer of continuous and discontinuous totalisers in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was approx. 83% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X units), constituting a 16% share of total imports.

The Philippines was also the fastest-growing in terms of the continuous and discontinuous totalisers imports, with a CAGR of +53.9% from 2012 to 2021. Singapore (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+80 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-77 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported continuous and discontinuous totalisers in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 14% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 6.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in the Philippines amounted to +11.4%.

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, declining by -76.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 109% against the previous year.
