In 2021, approx. X tons of copper ores and concentrates were exported in South-Eastern Asia; picking up by 64% compared with 2020. Total exports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +86.7% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 78%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, copper ores and concentrates exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a strong increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Indonesia dominates exports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) held a 6.7% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (6.6%). The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper ores and concentrates exports from Indonesia stood at +7.9%. At the same time, Malaysia (+26.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +26.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lao People's Democratic Republic (-2.2%) and the Philippines (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+12 p.p.) and Malaysia (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Lao People's Democratic Republic (-7 p.p.) and the Philippines (-8.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) remains the largest copper ores and concentrates supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 4.8% share.
In Indonesia, copper ores and concentrates exports increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (-4.2% per year) and Malaysia (+32.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 23% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+12.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Copper Ores And Concentrates
Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, imports of copper ores and concentrates in South-Eastern Asia expanded sharply to X tons, increasing by 15% on 2020. In general, imports saw buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 251% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, copper ores and concentrates imports declined remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 405% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Malaysia dominates imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 88% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), mixing up a 7.6% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to copper ores and concentrates imports into Malaysia stood at +36.0%. At the same time, Cambodia (+43.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +43.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Philippines (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+79 p.p.) and Cambodia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while the Philippines saw its share reduced by -70.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported copper ores and concentrates in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Philippines ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.
In Malaysia, copper ores and concentrates imports expanded at an average annual rate of +22.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (-17.3% per year) and Cambodia (+36.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -38.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 44%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
