Corrugated Paper Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian corrugated paper market dropped slightly to $X in 2021, flattening at the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of corrugated paper and paperboard, when their volume increased by 25% to X tons. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 58%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, corrugated paper exports surged to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 48%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the major exporters of corrugated paper and paperboard in 2021, amounting to near 38% and 30% of total exports, respectively. Vietnam (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Thailand (14%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +29.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 74% of total exports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +31.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 18% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of corrugated paper and paperboard, which increased by 59% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Singapore represented the main importer of corrugated paper and paperboard in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 47% of total imports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 48% share of total imports. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to corrugated paper imports into Singapore stood at -3.1%. At the same time, Cambodia (+46.2%), Thailand (+27.6%), Vietnam (+10.3%) and Indonesia (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +46.2% from 2012-2021. The Philippines experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand increased by +11, +5.4 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Vietnam ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 69% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 30%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +46.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -7.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
