Cottonseed Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian cottonseed market dropped modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -1.5% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Cottonseed Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, cottonseed production declined to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 113% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Myanmar (X tons) remains the largest cottonseed producing country in South-Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 85% of total volume. Moreover, cottonseed production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), sevenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Myanmar stood at -5.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+0.0% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (-1.2% per year).

Cottonseed Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of cottonseed decreased by -69.7% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 538%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

In value terms, cottonseed exports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 606% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), constituting a 29% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cottonseed exports from Indonesia stood at +10.1%. At the same time, Malaysia (+41.7%) and Myanmar (+12.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +41.7% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia increased by +41, +20 and +3.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +43.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 51% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Cottonseed Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of cottonseed were imported in South-Eastern Asia; falling by -51.6% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 299% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cottonseed imports reduced dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 173%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 63% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 35% share of total imports.

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cottonseed imports, with a CAGR of +28.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Indonesia (+12.7%) and Vietnam (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Malaysia increased by +46 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cottonseed in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

In Malaysia, cottonseed imports expanded at an average annual rate of +17.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+13.4% per year) and Indonesia (-0.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 45% against the previous year. Import price indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, cottonseed import price increased by +18.3% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 105%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+10.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
