Couscous Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, after six years of growth, there was significant decline in the Southeast Asian couscous market, when its value decreased by -9.5% to $X. The total consumption indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.
Couscous Production in South-Eastern Asia
In value terms, couscous production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.
Couscous Exports
Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of couscous increased by 255% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a precipitous decrease. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, couscous exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), constituting an 8.1% share of total exports.
Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the couscous exports, with a CAGR of -2.5% from 2012 to 2021. Thailand (-27.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia increased by +78 percentage points.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest couscous supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 91% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 7.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia amounted to +2.5%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, declining by -23.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 161%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+5.2%).
Couscous Imports
Imports in South-Eastern Asia
Couscous imports declined sharply to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -19.4% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a measured increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 68%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, couscous imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -29.4% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 49%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X tons) represented the key importer of couscous, committing 35% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (15%), Malaysia (14%), Thailand (11%) and Vietnam (7%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to couscous imports into Singapore stood at +6.5%. At the same time, Indonesia (+8.2%), Vietnam (+7.1%) and the Philippines (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +8.2% from 2012-2021. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+8.5 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.2 p.p.), the Philippines (+2.2 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-2.6 p.p.) and Malaysia (-16.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported couscous in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with an 8.3% share.
In Singapore, couscous imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Philippines (+7.3% per year) and Indonesia (+3.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 60% against the previous year. Import price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, couscous import price increased by +77.2% against 2017 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
