The Southeast Asian paper and paperboard market fell to $X in 2022, shrinking by -6.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a prominent expansion. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper and paperboard production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, overseas shipments of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) increased by 19% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper and paperboard exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together reaching 89% of total export. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), committing a 9.1% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +3.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 85% share of total exports. Thailand and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.
Thailand, with a CAGR of +7.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 14% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 32%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, overseas purchases of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) decreased by -46% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 35%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, paper and paperboard imports plummeted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 31%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell markedly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Singapore (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) represented the main importers of paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in 2022, amounting to approx. 38% and 28% of total imports, respectively. Vietnam (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (9.1%) and Thailand (5.5%). The following importers - Indonesia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +20.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported paper and paperboard (creped, crinkled, embossed or perforated) in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 17% share.
In Singapore, paper and paperboard imports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malaysia (+0.0% per year) and Vietnam (+14.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, paper and paperboard import price increased by +88.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 47%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
