In 2021, shipments abroad of crispbread increased by 6.1% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, crispbread exports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Thailand prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), committing a 7.6% share of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malaysia (+22.7%) and Indonesia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +22.7% from 2012-2021. Malaysia (+6.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -4.9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest crispbread supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 94% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports.

In Thailand, crispbread exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+16.5% per year) and Indonesia (-0.8% per year).

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -2.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 14%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of crispbread increased by 22% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports showed a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, crispbread imports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) represented roughly 96% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +37.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest crispbread importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Myanmar ($X), Singapore ($X) and Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), together comprising 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand, which together accounted for a further 31%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +34.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -11.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
