In 2022, shipments abroad of marble and travertine increased by 6% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 58%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, marble and travertine crude exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 37%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the crude exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Vietnam represented the major exporter of marble and travertine in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (7.4%).
Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of marble and travertine. Malaysia (-14.8%) and Indonesia (-36.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam and Malaysia increased by +68 and +5.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine crude supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam totaled +4.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (-34.0% per year) and Malaysia (-12.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, marble and travertine crude export price increased by +37.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, approx. X tons of marble and travertine were imported in South-Eastern Asia; growing by 130% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 449% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of crude imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, marble and travertine crude imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a strong increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Singapore was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 51% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to marble and travertine crude imports into Singapore stood at +17.5%. At the same time, Cambodia (+26.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-13.6%), Indonesia (-18.3%) and Malaysia (-26.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+48 p.p.) and Cambodia (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Vietnam, Indonesia and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -6.5%, -20.1% and -24.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported marble and travertine in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 94% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 2.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 1.7% share.
In Singapore, marble and travertine crude imports increased at an average annual rate of +35.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (-12.9% per year) and Indonesia (-14.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 296% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed significant growth. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
