In 2022, the Southeast Asian dried mushroom market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, posted a strong increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The total production indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +13.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of dried mushrooms and truffles was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 190% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, dried mushroom exports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) dominates exports structure, together constituting 82% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), comprising a 9.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - together made up 7.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +180.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest dried mushroom supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 9.1% share.

In Vietnam, dried mushroom exports increased at an average annual rate of +21.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+10.1% per year) and Malaysia (+5.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -15.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 85%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, purchases abroad of dried mushrooms and truffles decreased by -1.7% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 48%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dried mushroom imports rose to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the key importer of dried mushrooms and truffles in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 45% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took near 47% share of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +21.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest dried mushroom importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +20.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 28%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
