Dry Bean Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian dry bean market declined to $X in 2022, waning by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption saw a deep contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Dry Bean Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, dry bean production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 105%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

The country with the largest volume of dry bean production was Myanmar (X tons), comprising approx. 82% of total volume. Moreover, dry bean production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X tons), with a 4.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Myanmar amounted to -4.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Indonesia (-3.1% per year) and Vietnam (-1.1% per year).

In 2022, the average dry bean yield in South-Eastern Asia reached X kg per ha, approximately reflecting 2021. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the yield increased by 1.7%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of beans (dry) were harvested in South-Eastern Asia; growing by 3.1% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to dry bean production attained the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of beans (dry) increased by 6% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports posted a mild increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, dry bean exports contracted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Myanmar dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 95% of total exports in 2022. Thailand (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beans (dry) exports, with a CAGR of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Myanmar increased by +2.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest dry bean supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 93% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 3.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Myanmar was relatively modest.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -9.3% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 41% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.9%).

Dry Bean Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of beans (dry) decreased by -26.3% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, dry bean imports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a temperate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 50%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons), distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) were the largest importers of beans (dry), together committing 97% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +10.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and the Philippines ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 70% of total imports. Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +13.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -18.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
