Durum Wheat Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian durum wheat market increased by 11% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a slight decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Durum Wheat Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, durum wheat production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of durum wheat production was Myanmar (X tons), comprising approx. 73% of total volume. Moreover, durum wheat production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Singapore (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Myanmar amounted to -5.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Singapore (+0.8% per year) and Vietnam (+16,235.7% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of durum wheat in South-Eastern Asia soared to X tons per ha, growing by 16% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 52%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of durum wheat in South-Eastern Asia declined to X ha, waning by -9.4% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the harvested area increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to durum wheat production attained the maximum at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

Durum wheat exports shrank significantly to X tons in 2022, waning by -37.1% against 2021. In general, exports recorded a dramatic contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 183%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, durum wheat exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a dramatic decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Vietnam prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), mixing up a 6.9% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -22.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+15.9%) and Indonesia (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +15.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of Vietnam (+88 p.p.), Indonesia (+6.7 p.p.) and Thailand (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest durum wheat supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam stood at -24.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (+2.0% per year) and Thailand (+4.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 36% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Durum Wheat Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of durum wheat increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 190%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, durum wheat imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 165%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the largest importer of durum wheat in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 73% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons), together comprising a 20% share of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the durum wheat imports, with a CAGR of +126.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cambodia (+4.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Indonesia (-21.1%) and Malaysia (-22.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand and Cambodia increased by +73 and +5.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported durum wheat in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 5.8% share.

In Thailand, durum wheat imports expanded at an average annual rate of +143.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-17.9% per year) and Cambodia (+4.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 26% against the previous year. Import price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, durum wheat import price increased by +84.7% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 46%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
