The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 44% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant exports stood at $X in 2022. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +79.5% against 2015 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 21%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

Malaysia prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 85% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), committing a 5.6% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to eggplant exports from Malaysia stood at +2.1%. At the same time, Thailand (+36.5%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+18.7%) and Vietnam (+16.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +36.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Indonesia (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+7.5 p.p.), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+4.4 p.p.) and Thailand (+4.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-16.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest eggplant supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 4.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia amounted to +3.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+23.3% per year) and Indonesia (-16.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 34%. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, eggplant imports rose sharply to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period.
