For the third year in a row, the Southeast Asian filter block market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -24.1% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption showed a abrupt decrease. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filter block production dropped modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, which increased by 1.1% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 47%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, filter block exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 35%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, namely Thailand, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp exports, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012 to 2022. Thailand (+7.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) also remains the largest filter block supplier in South-Eastern Asia.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand amounted to +12.7%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -4.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Thailand.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Thailand amounted to -1.4% per year.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, when their volume decreased by -25% to X tons. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 36%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, filter block imports fell sharply to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +7.9% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 51%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) represented the largest importer of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp, constituting 53% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (13%), Thailand (6.2%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (5.2%). The Philippines (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +10.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+11.3%) and Malaysia (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lao People's Democratic Republic (-2.0%), Thailand (-4.1%), the Philippines (-7.0%) and Singapore (-20.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+27 p.p.) and Vietnam (+8.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lao People's Democratic Republic, Thailand, the Philippines and Singapore saw its share reduced by -3%, -6%, -7.3% and -18.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 75% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of +9.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+18.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
