Filter Paper Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, the Southeast Asian filter paper market decreased by -3.1% to $X for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption increased by +55.2% against 2013 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Filter Paper Production in South-Eastern Asia
In value terms, filter paper production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.8% against 2013 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then fell in the following year.
Filter Paper Exports
Exports in South-Eastern Asia
After two years of decline, overseas shipments of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 121% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, filter paper exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a mild decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 112%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Singapore (X tons) was the main exporter of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape, achieving 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together comprising a 27% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to filter paper exports from Singapore stood at +13.4%. At the same time, Vietnam (+47.6%) and Indonesia (+19.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +47.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, the Philippines (-2.4%), Thailand (-15.7%) and Malaysia (-21.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam increased by +46, +12 and +2.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest filter paper supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 5.5% share.
In Singapore, filter paper exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+22.3% per year) and the Philippines (+7.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 4.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 25% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Filter Paper Imports
Imports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2021, supplies from abroad of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape decreased by -10.8% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, filter paper imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw noticeable growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Indonesia (X tons), distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) represented the main importers of filter paper and paperboard cut to shape, together creating 100% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +53.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 60% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 40%.
Cambodia, with a CAGR of +32.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 33% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
