In 2021, the Southeast Asian folding boxboard market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In 2021, approx. X tons of folding boxboard were exported in South-Eastern Asia; surging by 12% against the previous year. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, folding boxboard exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of folding boxboard, namely Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 6.7% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest folding boxboard supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.

In Singapore, folding boxboard exports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+7.4% per year) and Thailand (+10.8% per year).

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, folding boxboard imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the major importer of folding boxboard in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Thailand (16%), the Philippines (9.2%), Indonesia (9.2%) and Singapore (7.5%).

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
