The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 18% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, folding boxboard exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The shipments of the three major exporters of folding boxboard, namely Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 6.7% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In Singapore, folding boxboard exports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+7.4% per year) and Thailand (+10.8% per year).

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the major importer of folding boxboard in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 36% of total imports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by Thailand (16%), the Philippines (9.2%), Indonesia (9.2%) and Singapore (7.5%).

In value terms, the largest folding boxboard importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 70% of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, the Philippines and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +11.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, rising by 8.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a mild descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
