Frozen Freshwater Fish Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian frozen freshwater fish market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after four years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a pronounced downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +35.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 67%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of frozen freshwater fish decreased by -8.5% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish exports expanded slightly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 26%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the largest exporters of frozen freshwater fish in South-Eastern Asia, together comprising 67% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (12%). The Philippines (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +78.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest frozen freshwater fish supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X), together comprising 84% of total exports. Thailand and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +54.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Export price indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, frozen freshwater fish imports in South-Eastern Asia rose notably to X tons, picking up by 15% on the previous year. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, frozen freshwater fish imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 84% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Thailand (X tons) was the key importer of frozen freshwater fish, making up 42% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together making up a 52% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for the Philippines (with a CAGR of +23.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 82% of total imports. The Philippines and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +39.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -1.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
