Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, exports of ghee in South-Eastern Asia reduced to X tons, dropping by -9.2% against 2021. Overall, exports saw a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ghee exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 67% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 28% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Vietnam (+63.5%) and the Philippines (+29.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +63.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-1.7%), Indonesia (-6.9%) and Singapore (-25.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+36 p.p.), Vietnam (+11 p.p.) and the Philippines (+5.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Indonesia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -52.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest ghee supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Malaysia stood at +5.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+66.1% per year) and the Philippines (+46.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.3%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+13.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of ghee imported in South-Eastern Asia contracted to X tons, with a decrease of -11.3% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, ghee imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +19.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the five major importers of ghee, namely the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), constituting a 5.2% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +1.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest ghee importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were the Philippines ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together accounting for 66% of total imports.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +9.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ghee import price increased by +24.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the import price increased by 58%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
