In 2022, the Southeast Asian gingerbread market decreased by -0.3% to $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year rising trend. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of gingerbread increased by 11% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 87%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, gingerbread exports totaled $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 52% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand represented the major exporter of gingerbread in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 58% of total exports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (11%), the Philippines (7.7%) and Malaysia (6.9%). Myanmar (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to gingerbread exports from Thailand stood at -2.9%. At the same time, Myanmar (+5.4%), Malaysia (+4.7%) and Indonesia (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +5.4% from 2012-2022. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, the Philippines (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and Malaysia increased by +5.6, +4.5, +4.3, +4 and +3.9 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest gingerbread supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 63% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at -4.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+2.1% per year) and Indonesia (+0.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a noticeable setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, approx. X tons of gingerbread were imported in South-Eastern Asia; waning by -78.2% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 315% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, gingerbread imports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 89% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of gingerbread imports in 2022 were Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together accounting for 82% of total import. It was distantly followed by Timor-Leste (X tons), generating a 5.9% share of total imports. The following importers - Thailand (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - each amounted to an 8.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +67.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest gingerbread importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 68% share of total imports.

Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +69.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 253% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a abrupt downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
