The Southeast Asian flat glass market reduced to $X in 2021, shrinking by -9.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of flat glass were exported in South-Eastern Asia; surging by 24% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a slight reduction. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, flat glass exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of flat glass, namely Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), comprising a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malaysia (with a CAGR of +14.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest flat glass supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 79% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 21% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Flat Glass Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, overseas purchases of flat glass decreased by -2.7% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Total imports indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -35.1% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, flat glass imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Malaysia was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 40% of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Thailand (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 49% share of total imports. Myanmar (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of flat glass. At the same time, the Philippines (+16.1%), Cambodia (+14.2%), Indonesia (+6.7%) and Vietnam (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +16.1% from 2012-2021. Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+12 p.p.), Cambodia (+3.8 p.p.) and Indonesia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-6.5 p.p.) and Malaysia (-6.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 81% of total imports. The Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 15%.

In terms of the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +17.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable descent. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
