Grapefruit Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian grapefruit market expanded to $X in 2022, rising by 3.1% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, showed buoyant growth. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Grapefruit Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, grapefruit production expanded markedly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Vietnam (X tons) remains the largest grapefruit producing country in South-Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 75% of total volume. Moreover, grapefruit production in Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Thailand (X tons), fourfold.

In Vietnam, grapefruit production expanded at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Thailand (+1.3% per year) and the Philippines (-1.3% per year).

The average grapefruit yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, picking up by 1.8% compared with the previous year. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the grapefruit yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The grapefruit harvested area shrank slightly to X ha in 2022, falling by -4.6% compared with the previous year. The total harvested area indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grapefruit harvested area decreased by -8.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the grapefruit harvested area remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Grapefruit Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of grapefruits increased by 9.2% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 108% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, grapefruit exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the key exporter of grapefruits in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 31% share of total exports. Myanmar (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to grapefruit exports from Thailand stood at +9.6%. At the same time, Myanmar (+113.8%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+69.9%), Vietnam (+9.8%) and Malaysia (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +113.8% from 2012-2022. Lao People's Democratic Republic (+5.5 p.p.) and Myanmar (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -2.6% and -3.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest grapefruit supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Thailand totaled +25.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+10.1% per year) and Malaysia (+4.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, grapefruit export price increased by +97.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+14.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Grapefruit Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

After four years of growth, supplies from abroad of grapefruits decreased by -33.8% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed measured growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then dropped dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, grapefruit imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Singapore (X tons) was the largest importer of grapefruits, generating 40% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Brunei Darussalam (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 55% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Singapore decreased at an average annual rate of -1.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+99.4%), Cambodia (+37.5%), Brunei Darussalam (+25.9%) and Malaysia (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +99.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Lao People's Democratic Republic (-1.4%) and Vietnam (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Thailand, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Cambodia increased by +16, +6.7, +5.8 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported grapefruits in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 8.3% share.

In Singapore, grapefruit imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+11.1% per year) and Vietnam (+2.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 24% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.2%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
