Exports by Country

Lao People's Democratic Republic represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons), together mixing up a 26% share of total exports. The following exporters - Myanmar (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.6% share of total exports.

Lao People's Democratic Republic was also the fastest-growing in terms of the groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) exports, with a CAGR of +11.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Vietnam (-2.3%), Singapore (-14.9%), Malaysia (-27.2%) and Myanmar (-30.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Lao People's Democratic Republic (+58 p.p.) and Thailand (+13 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore, Myanmar and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -26.8% and -33.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X) remains the largest non-wheat groats supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Lao People's Democratic Republic totaled +12.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+21.6% per year) and Malaysia (-21.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 4.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +7.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-wheat groats export price increased by +42.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 57%. In 2021, supplies from abroad of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the fourth consecutive year after four years of decline. Overall, imports, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-wheat groats imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand was the largest importer of groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) took a 21% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (12%), Cambodia (6.5%), Vietnam (6%) and Singapore (5.5%).

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) imports, with a CAGR of +73.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+62.8%), Vietnam (+26.2%) and Singapore (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Cambodia (-15.9%) and Malaysia (-33.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+46 p.p.), Indonesia (+21 p.p.), Vietnam (+5.9 p.p.) and Singapore (+5.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Malaysia (-80.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported groats and meal of cereals (excluding wheat) in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 14% share.

In Thailand, non-wheat groats imports increased at an average annual rate of +72.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+57.9% per year) and Malaysia (-30.9% per year).

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year.
