Handmade Paper Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
The Southeast Asian handmade paper market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine-year period. In value terms, handmade paper production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -39.5% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia
Handmade paper exports reduced modestly to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -3.3% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, handmade paper exports dropped to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 33%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Malaysia (X tons) was the largest exporter of handmade paper and paperboard, mixing up 45% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a 28% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (9.1%), Vietnam (7.8%), Indonesia (5.1%) and the Philippines (4.8%).
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +34.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Malaysia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Singapore ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 94% share of total exports. Vietnam and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.4%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +13.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -3.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 152% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the Philippines ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+4.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
Handmade paper imports fell to X tons in 2021, which is down by -8.3% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 221%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, handmade paper imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 135%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Singapore was the largest importing country with an import of about X tons, which finished at 41% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total imports. Timor-Leste (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Timor-Leste (with a CAGR of +50.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported handmade paper and paperboard in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 57% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by the Philippines, with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam amounted to +31.5%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (-0.3% per year) and the Philippines (+24.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 82% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
