The Southeast Asian skates market skyrocketed to $X in 2021, picking up by 51% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a strong expansion. The level of consumption peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Skates Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, skates production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 71% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of ice skates and roller skates decreased by -43.4% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year rising trend. In general, exports showed a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In value terms, skates exports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Vietnam represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X tons, which finished at 68% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to skates exports from Vietnam stood at +1.9%. At the same time, Malaysia (+48.0%) and Singapore (+20.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malaysia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+27 p.p.), Malaysia (+11 p.p.) and Singapore (+5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-42 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +42.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 27% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, purchases abroad of ice skates and roller skates increased by 110% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 233%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, skates imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded prominent growth. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) was the key importer of ice skates and roller skates, making up 58% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. Cambodia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +29.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+36.9%), Thailand (+34.9%), Malaysia (+17.4%) and Vietnam (+11.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +36.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+34 p.p.), Thailand (+11 p.p.) and Cambodia (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-6.1 p.p.) and Singapore (-39.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 63% share of total imports. Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +28.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 198%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
