Kola Nut Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian kola nut market decreased by -0.7% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +1.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 50%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of kola nut production was Singapore (X tons), comprising approx. 91% of total volume. Moreover, kola nut production in Singapore exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Malaysia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Singapore was relatively modest. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Malaysia (+1.0% per year) and Vietnam (+0.7% per year).

In 2022, overseas shipments of kola nuts were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, faced a abrupt downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 239% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, kola nut exports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 1,238%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Vietnam prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X kg), creating an 8.4% share of total exports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the kola nuts exports, with a CAGR of -3.7% from 2012 to 2022. Malaysia (-27.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+53 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -49.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest kola nut supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 4% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam amounted to -2.4%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -11% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 1,901%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Malaysia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.4%).

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

After two years of decline, overseas purchases of kola nuts increased by 12% to X kg in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a precipitous slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 4,180%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, kola nut imports reached $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 8,073% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Malaysia (X kg) represented roughly 100% of total imports in 2022.

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the kola nuts imports, with a CAGR of -20.1% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Malaysia (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
