Leek Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian leek market shrank to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -6.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +8.6% against 2020 indices. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Leek Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, leek production contracted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted a tangible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 112%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Indonesia (X tons) remains the largest leek producing country in South-Eastern Asia, comprising approx. 99% of total volume.

The average leek yield dropped slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, which is down by -4% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the leek yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were harvested in South-Eastern Asia; therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 8.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to leek production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 39%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, leek exports totaled $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 43%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Malaysia dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together achieving a 15% share of total exports.

Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+29.5%) and Vietnam (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +29.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Thailand (+7.2 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest leek supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia totaled +8.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+5.4% per year) and Thailand (+25.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, falling by -17.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Leek Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas purchases of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables decreased by -11.5% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 76%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, leek imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 46%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the major importer of leeks and other alliaceous vegetables in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 47% of total imports in 2022. Malaysia (X tons) took a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (16%) and Thailand (12%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +85.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest leek importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 95% share of total imports.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +72.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 7.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 14%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
