In 2022, the average yield of lemons and limes in South-Eastern Asia shrank slightly to X tons per ha, remaining constant against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the lemon and lime yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2021, and then fell in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of lemons and limes production in South-Eastern Asia amounted to X ha, increasing by 2.8% against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in shipments abroad of lemons and limes, when their volume decreased by -2.7% to X tons. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lemon and lime exports reached $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 111%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) was the key exporter of lemons and limes, comprising 75% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 13% share, followed by Malaysia (6.5%). Singapore (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +34.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Thailand (+49.5%) and Singapore (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +49.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Vietnam and Thailand increased by +49 and +11 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest lemon and lime supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 9.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +34.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+39.2% per year) and Singapore (+5.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 31%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, overseas purchases of lemons and limes decreased by -4.3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, lemon and lime imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the four major importers of lemons and limes, namely Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Brunei Darussalam (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +44.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X), the Philippines ($X) and Indonesia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 76% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +51.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the import price increased by 22%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
