Exports in South-Eastern Asia

For the fourth year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in overseas shipments of liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water, which increased by 1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, liquid air and distilled water exports reduced rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 76% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the largest exporter of liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 51% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (15%), the Philippines (6.6%) and Indonesia (6.2%).

Exports from Thailand increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Indonesia (+39.7%), Malaysia (+15.0%), Singapore (+10.6%) and the Philippines (+2.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +39.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore increased by +9, +5.6 and +3.5 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 89% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Thailand and Indonesia, which together accounted for a further 10%.

Indonesia, with a CAGR of +42.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -25.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 80%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, supplies from abroad of liquid or compressed air and distilled or conductivity water increased by 4.5% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, liquid air and distilled water imports shrank slightly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 107%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), constituting a 4.8% share of total imports. The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to liquid air and distilled water imports into Singapore stood at -4.3%. The Philippines (-4.1%) and Malaysia (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Singapore (+4.8 p.p.) and the Philippines (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Malaysia saw its share reduced by -3.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest liquid air and distilled water importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and the Philippines ($X), together comprising 90% of total imports.

Singapore, with a CAGR of +6.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -7.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 71%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
