Lysine Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian lysine market increased by 8.9% to $X, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lysine production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 3.7%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof exported in South-Eastern Asia reduced sharply to X tons, shrinking by -24.3% on the year before. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, lysine exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof, namely Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

Indonesia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the lysine and its esters, and salts thereof exports, with a CAGR of -5.3% from 2012 to 2022. While the share of Indonesia (+16 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) also remains the largest lysine supplier in South-Eastern Asia.

In Indonesia, lysine exports contracted by an average annual rate of -6.5% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 67% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Indonesia.

From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Indonesia amounted to -1.3% per year.

Lysine Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, supplies from abroad of lysine and its esters, and salts thereof decreased by -3.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after seven years of growth. In general, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 47%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, lysine imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +88.7% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of lysine imports in 2022 were Vietnam (X tons), Thailand (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons), together reaching 88% of total import. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons), generating a 7.7% share of total imports. The following importers - Myanmar (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +107.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Cambodia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 26%.

Myanmar, with a CAGR of +103.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Thailand ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) and Cambodia ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Myanmar (-2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
