Malaysia dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 81% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X units), the Philippines (X units) and Singapore (X units), together committing a 15% share of total exports. Vietnam (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard exports, with a CAGR of +19.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+16.7%), the Philippines (+9.9%) and Indonesia (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-28.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+69 p.p.), Indonesia (+3.7 p.p.), the Philippines (+3.5 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Singapore (-57.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest paper making machinery supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by the Philippines ($X), with a 5.6% share of total exports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 3.6% share.

In Malaysia, paper making machinery exports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: the Philippines (+38.8% per year) and Singapore (-28.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -1.7% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 55%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, paper making machinery imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 52% of total imports. Indonesia (X units) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X units), Malaysia (X units) and Cambodia (X units). All these countries together took approx. 45% share of total imports. The Philippines (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +28.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+30.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012-2021. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-3.1%), Indonesia (-10.3%) and the Philippines (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Vietnam and Cambodia increased by +46 and +4.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported machinery for making up paper pulp, paper or paperboard in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 22% share of total imports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

In Vietnam, paper making machinery imports increased at an average annual rate of +14.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (-13.4% per year) and Malaysia (-2.8% per year).
