In 2021, the Southeast Asian public works machinery market decreased by -10.4% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after six years of growth. Overall, consumption, however, posted a buoyant increase. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, the amount of machinery for public works and building exported in South-Eastern Asia soared to X units, growing by 17% on 2020 figures. In general, exports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 109%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, public works machinery exports declined sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Singapore dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X units), Cambodia (X units), Indonesia (X units) and Vietnam (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Singapore increased at an average annual rate of +16.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+48.4%), Indonesia (+27.9%) and Vietnam (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +48.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-20.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Singapore, Cambodia and Indonesia increased by +48, +3.5 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest public works machinery supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Malaysia ($X), Singapore ($X) and Indonesia ($X), with a combined 83% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Vietnam and Cambodia, which together accounted for a further 13%.

Among the main exporting countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +32.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -29.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 122% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, imports of machinery for public works and building in South-Eastern Asia shrank to X units, with a decrease of -13.7% on 2020 figures. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 145%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, public works machinery imports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate mild growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Singapore represented the key importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 45% of total imports. Thailand (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Vietnam (X units) and the Philippines (X units). All these countries together held near 48% share of total imports. The following importers - Indonesia (X units), Malaysia (X units) and Cambodia (X units) - each recorded a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +45.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest public works machinery importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Thailand ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together accounting for 75% of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 24%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cambodia, with a CAGR of +12.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, growing by 4.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per unit), while Singapore ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
