Malt Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

The Southeast Asian malt market dropped to $X in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a pronounced decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Malt Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, malt production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 2.5% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Malt Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, approx. X tons of malt (not roasted) were exported in South-Eastern Asia; with an increase of 342% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports saw prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 370%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 437%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 65% of total exports. Cambodia (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (9%). Singapore (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

Thailand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the malt (not roasted) exports, with a CAGR of +365.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cambodia (+27.5%) and Singapore (+12.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Vietnam (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+65 p.p.) and Cambodia (+22 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Vietnam (-48.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) emerged as the largest malt supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cambodia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Vietnam, with an 11% share.

In Thailand, malt exports expanded at an average annual rate of +358.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+30.7% per year) and Vietnam (-7.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Malt Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

Malt imports declined to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -8.6% compared with the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports contracted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 27%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the key importers of malt (not roasted) in 2021, amounting to near 30% and 27% of total imports, respectively. The Philippines (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Singapore (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 34% share of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +29.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Vietnam ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Cambodia, Singapore, Myanmar and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 25%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +26.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 9.8%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and the Philippines ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
