The Southeast Asian marble and travertine market dropped to $X in 2021, which is down by -2.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. In 2021, overseas shipments of marble and travertine increased by 15% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a pronounced downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 58%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, marble and travertine exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 65%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Cambodia represented the major exporter of marble and travertine in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 40% share of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Cambodia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the marble and travertine exports, with a CAGR of +171.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Myanmar (+3.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Vietnam (-4.0%), Malaysia (-12.1%) and Indonesia (-19.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cambodia (+57 p.p.) and Myanmar (+4.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -2.3% and -48.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) remains the largest marble and travertine supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Cambodia ($X), with a 19% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 9% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam totaled +1.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Cambodia (+88.4% per year) and Indonesia (-22.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -26.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a pronounced slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Cambodia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2021, the amount of marble and travertine imported in South-Eastern Asia fell modestly to X tons, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, marble and travertine imports totaled $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Vietnam represented the key importer of marble and travertine in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) took a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Indonesia (16%), Malaysia (12%) and Singapore (7.9%). Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+30.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +30.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Singapore (-5.7%), Thailand (-8.4%), Malaysia (-9.6%) and Indonesia (-16.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+32 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-3.7 p.p.), Malaysia (-4.3 p.p.) and Indonesia (-27.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest marble and travertine importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Thailand ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 69% share of total imports. Indonesia, Malaysia and Lao People's Democratic Republic lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Among the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +29.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 8.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.3%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
