In 2022, the Southeast Asian melon seed market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -22.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the production volume increased by 81% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Myanmar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of melon seed production, accounting for 96% of total volume. Moreover, melon seed production in Myanmar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Indonesia (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Myanmar was relatively modest.

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, shipments abroad of melon seed was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 112% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed exports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 72%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), constituting a 5.8% share of total exports. The following exporters - Vietnam (X kg), Singapore (X kg), Myanmar (X kg) and Malaysia (X kg) - together made up 11% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon seed exports from Thailand stood at +6.7%. At the same time, Indonesia (+28.4%), Vietnam (+11.7%) and Malaysia (+9.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +28.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-20.8%) and Myanmar (-27.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+52 p.p.), Indonesia (+5.4 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-19.9 p.p.) and Myanmar (-41.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest melon seed supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at +11.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+26.9% per year) and Indonesia (+31.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, waning by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 85%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+13.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 29%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) represented the main importer of melon seed, creating 73% of total imports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by the Philippines (11%). Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Vietnam decreased at an average annual rate of -6.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+32.6%) and Singapore (+5.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +32.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-4.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Philippines (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-13.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam totaled -1.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+10.8% per year) and the Philippines (+40.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon seed import price increased by +33.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 41%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
