Melon Market Size in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the Southeast Asian melon market decreased by -2.1% to $X, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Melon Production in South-Eastern Asia

In value terms, melon production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 24%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Myanmar (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), with a combined 95% share of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +10.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average melon yield dropped to X tons per ha in 2022, flattening at 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the yield increased by 24% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of melons were harvested in South-Eastern Asia; growing by 1.9% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, showed a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 25%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the melon harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Melon Exports

Exports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, overseas shipments of melons increased by 105% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, exports saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 260%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Myanmar represented the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 57% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) took a 34% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (5.1%). Singapore (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Myanmar (with a CAGR of +48.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 89% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +58.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -25% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 70%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell dramatically in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+8.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Melon Imports

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, approx. X tons of melons were imported in South-Eastern Asia; picking up by 14% compared with the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon imports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 30%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Singapore was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which reached 43% of total imports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Thailand (15%), Brunei Darussalam (12%) and Vietnam (9.2%).

Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of melons. At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+18.8%), Malaysia (+7.5%) and Thailand (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +18.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Malaysia (+12 p.p.), Brunei Darussalam (+11 p.p.), Singapore (+8.8 p.p.) and Thailand (+6.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Vietnam (-37.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported melons in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.

In Singapore, melon imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+14.4% per year) and Thailand (+5.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -1.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.3%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 19%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+6.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
