In 2022, overseas shipments of molasses (excluding cane molasses) increased by 51% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 805%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-cane molasses exports reached $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 98% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented roughly 77% of total exports in 2022. Indonesia (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Vietnam (9.7%).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +8.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Thailand ($X) and Malaysia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 98% share of total exports.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +15.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In 2022, the export price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -25.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, non-cane molasses imports totaled $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Indonesia represented the major importer of molasses (excluding cane molasses) in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 57% of total imports in 2022. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Malaysia (X tons). All these countries together held near 42% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +24.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
In value terms, the largest non-cane molasses importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Indonesia ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 96% share of total imports.
Malaysia, with a CAGR of +16.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.
