In 2022, the Southeast Asian mushroom and truffle market decreased by -9.3% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +77.2% against 2015 indices. In 2022, shipments abroad of mushrooms and truffles increased by 15% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +72.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle exports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the key exporter of mushrooms and truffles in South-Eastern Asia, achieving 98% of total export.

The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while Thailand amounted to $X per ton.

In 2022, approx. X tons of mushrooms and truffles were imported in South-Eastern Asia; rising by 11% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, mushroom and truffle imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed resilient growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the mushrooms and truffles imports, with a CAGR of +55.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+24.0%), Malaysia (+9.5%), Indonesia (+8.9%), Thailand (+8.1%) and Singapore (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of Vietnam (+53 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-2.9 p.p.), Malaysia (-10.1 p.p.), Singapore (-19.5 p.p.) and Thailand (-20.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported mushrooms and truffles in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Vietnam amounted to +33.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+13.1% per year) and Singapore (+1.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -18% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
