In 2022, the Southeast Asian market for non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk increased by 19% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total consumption indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +74.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the production volume increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In 2022, shipments abroad of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk decreased by -42.2% to X litres, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, exports, however, posted a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -37.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 24%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand was the key exporter of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of exports recording X litres, which was approx. 55% of total exports in 2022. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X litres) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (13%), Singapore (6.1%) and Vietnam (6.1%). Indonesia (X litres) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk exports from Thailand stood at +5.1%. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+26.9%), Vietnam (+14.3%), Indonesia (+3.6%) and Singapore (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +26.9% from 2012-2022. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Lao People's Democratic Republic (+15 p.p.) and Vietnam (+3.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.6%, -2.9% and -11.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the largest non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Thailand stood at +2.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+21.1% per year) and Malaysia (-1.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per litre in 2022, growing by 8.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a mild curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 36%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per litre), while Malaysia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+2.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia

In 2022, the amount of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk imported in South-Eastern Asia shrank slightly to X litres, reducing by -1.6% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-alcoholic beverage, not containing milk imports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 52% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Cambodia was the largest importer of non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk in South-Eastern Asia, with the volume of imports resulting at X litres, which was approx. 39% of total imports in 2022. Singapore (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 19% share, followed by the Philippines (15%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (9.6%) and Vietnam (8%). Brunei Darussalam (X litres) and Malaysia (X litres) took a minor share of total imports.

Cambodia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk imports, with a CAGR of +34.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+27.3%), Vietnam (+22.9%), Lao People's Democratic Republic (+5.2%), Brunei Darussalam (+4.4%) and Singapore (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Malaysia (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Cambodia (+33 p.p.), the Philippines (+11 p.p.) and Vietnam (+5.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Brunei Darussalam, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia and Singapore saw its share reduced by -2.2%, -6.1%, -11.8% and -15.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Cambodia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported non-alcoholic beverages, not containing milk in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Cambodia stood at +45.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+29.7% per year) and Singapore (+3.3% per year).
