The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

In value terms, nucleic acid exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 53%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), creating a 16% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+38.7%) and Singapore (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand increased by +4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest nucleic acid supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of nucleic acids and their salts, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.6% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, nucleic acid imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) was the key importer of nucleic acids and their salts in South-Eastern Asia, creating 79% of total import. Singapore (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (4.9%). The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
