In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in overseas shipments of nucleic acids and their salts, when their volume decreased by -1.3% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 11% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, nucleic acid exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 53%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Indonesia represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), creating a 16% share of total exports. Thailand (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+38.7%) and Singapore (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Thailand increased by +4 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest nucleic acid supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.
In Singapore, nucleic acid exports shrank by an average annual rate of -8.6% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (-3.7% per year) and Thailand (+25.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -23.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price saw a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 45%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (-6.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in South-Eastern Asia
For the third year in a row, South-Eastern Asia recorded growth in supplies from abroad of nucleic acids and their salts, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +76.6% against 2012 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, nucleic acid imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Thailand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) was the key importer of nucleic acids and their salts in South-Eastern Asia, creating 79% of total import. Singapore (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (4.9%). The Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +12.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and Indonesia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 74% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia, which together accounted for a further 25%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +17.1%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
