O-Xylene Market Size in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, the Southeast Asian o-xylene market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced curtailment. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
O-Xylene Production in South-Eastern Asia
In value terms, o-xylene production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the production volume increased by 10% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
O-Xylene Exports
Exports in South-Eastern Asia
In 2022, shipments abroad of o-xylene decreased by -18.4% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, o-xylene exports rose rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, Singapore (X tons) was the largest exporter of o-xylene, generating 60% of total exports. Indonesia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 27% share, followed by Thailand (13%).
Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of o-xylene. At the same time, Indonesia (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in South-Eastern Asia, with a CAGR of +6.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-2.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Indonesia (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-5.5 p.p.) and Thailand (-5.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, Singapore ($X) remains the largest o-xylene supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with an 18% share of total exports.
In Singapore, o-xylene exports plunged by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (-4.8% per year) and Indonesia (-7.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 34% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (-2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
O-Xylene Imports
Imports in South-Eastern Asia
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of o-xylene increased by 14% to X tons in 2022. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, o-xylene imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of o-xylene imports in 2022 were Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together recording 99% of total import.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Malaysia (with a CAGR of +3.4%).
In value terms, the largest o-xylene importing markets in South-Eastern Asia were Indonesia ($X) and Malaysia ($X).
In terms of the main importing countries, Indonesia, with a CAGR of -1.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 39%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Malaysia totaled $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (-1.8%).
