The Southeast Asian onion and shallot market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, picking up by 2.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the last decade. Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 3.6%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the onion and shallot yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the amount of onions and shallots exported in South-Eastern Asia surged to X tons, picking up by 32% against 2021 figures. Overall, exports posted a tangible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 63%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when exports increased by 61%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) was the major exporter of onions and shallots, generating 62% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 33% share of total exports. The following exporters - Indonesia (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) - each accounted for a 4.3% share of total exports.

Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the onions and shallots exports, with a CAGR of +35.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+29.3%), Singapore (+15.2%) and Malaysia (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Thailand (-7.3%), Indonesia (-14.7%) and Vietnam (-15.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Myanmar (+58 p.p.), Singapore (+5.3 p.p.) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam saw its share reduced by -12.4%, -22% and -27.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Myanmar ($X) remains the largest onion and shallot supplier in South-Eastern Asia, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Myanmar amounted to +34.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+5.3% per year) and Thailand (-3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -22.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded mild growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, onion and shallot imports stood at $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons) was the key importer of onions and shallots, committing 57% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons), together achieving a 40% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to onion and shallot imports into Malaysia stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Singapore (+2.8%) and Indonesia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth.
