The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 33%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, optical telescope exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a slight reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, Myanmar (X units) represented the main exporter of optical telescopes, achieving 43% of total exports. The Philippines (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 26% share, followed by Singapore (15%), Malaysia (5.4%) and Thailand (5%). Indonesia (X units) and Vietnam (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +30.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Singapore ($X), Thailand ($X) and the Philippines ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 93% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam, which together accounted for a further 7.2%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Myanmar, with a CAGR of +24.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -9.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 270%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while Vietnam ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+48.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of optical telescopes increased by 45% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +24.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per unit, approximately equating the previous year. Overall, the import price enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 163%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while Malaysia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
