The Southeast Asian organic surface active agent market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after three years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the market value increased by 9.8%. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +48.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 20%. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, organic surface active agent exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the four major exporters of organic surface active agents, namely Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X tons), creating a 5.9% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +19.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest organic surface active agent supplying countries in South-Eastern Asia were Singapore ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports. Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.

Among the main exporting countries, Vietnam, with a CAGR of +20.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in South-Eastern Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a noticeable decrease. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+0.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Organic surface active agent imports totaled X tons in 2021, surging by 11% on 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 11%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the five major importers of organic surface active agents, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Singapore (X tons) held a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Myanmar (4.7%).

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +8.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Thailand, Singapore, the Philippines and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 39%.

Among the main importing countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +9.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in South-Eastern Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a slight curtailment. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
